Extending the Professional Certificate in Asset Management Planning for Sustainable Service Delivery

In-depth live sessions on integrating climate change, natural assets, and equity considerations into asset management planning

What is the “Extension” course?

This course is being offered to participants who have previously taken the Professional Certificate in Asset Management Planning, or equivalent training or experience, so they can extend their knowledge and capacity around equitable climate considerations and how it integrates with other organizational plans, specifically the asset management plan, the long-term financial plan, climate adaptation planning, natural asset management planning, and equity considerations. It will utilize your own organizations information, and meet you where you are, to apply practical knowledge and skills related to equitable climate adaptation and resilience planning, and green infrastructure, for systems and procedures.

The subsidized fee payable is C$90 + 5% GST per person. Total C$94.50 pp.

Subsidized Eligibility & Conditions

1. Eligible Participants:

  • Individuals employed or elected by a Canadian local government (i.e., a town, city, region, district, etc.).
  • Individuals employed by a not-for-profit corporation serving the local government sector (e.g., community organizations, health authorities, utilities, transit authorities, conservation authorities, GMF partners, etc.).
  • Individuals employed by or elected officials from an Indigenous community.
  • Individuals employed by an Indigenous community operating under delegated authority by a province or territory (e.g., Northwest Territory settlements, Metis Settlement Council of Alberta).

2. Ineligible Participants:

  • Consultants or for-profit businesses.
  • Individuals employed by provincial/territorial or federal government (except if meeting the eligible participant criteria above).
  • General members of the public.

3. Course Deliverables:

Participants will be required to complete the following deliverables:

  1. Draft an improvement plan.
  2. An individual course evaluation.

Course Overview

Learn by doing with this 6-session live online course which provides a practical, engaging and interactive learning experience designed to increase your asset management skills. The course will present case studies, learning activities, key principles of asset management, key principles of climate planning, applied learning on the application of climate and asset management concepts, links to available resources, and future planning focused on integrating equitable climate considerations across the organizations plans, specifically the asset management plan and the long-term financial plan. It will utilize your own organizations information and meet you where you are at to apply practical knowledge and skills.

Presented by some of the profession’s leading mentors, this course can benefit organizations of all sizes from beginners to experienced practitioners

Sessions are presented on Wednesdays (11:00am MDT) (Delivery 3 – Fall 2026 will be on Thursdays 11:00am MDT), they will be recorded and made available to participants. There will be “homework” activities to complete throughout the week after each session.

Course Objectives + Outcomes

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the role of the asset management plan related to integrated planning, including long-term financial plans, climate adaptation plans and strategic plans
  • Incorporate climate considerations into all aspects of asset management planning
  • Incorporate natural asset considerations into asset management planning
  • Incorporate equity considerations into asset management planning
  • Incorporate climate considerations into all aspects of asset management planning
  • Review and modify existing asset management plans, processes and systems to holistically include and respond to climate risk and or adaption actions
  • Develop continuous improvement strategies for updating plans and processes over time
  • Understand the need to work as a cross functional team to apply equity –informed climate action across the Organizations in an integrated and holistic way.

Course Outputs:

  • View all 6 live or recorded sessions
  • Submit a “final assignment” which is an Improvement plan defining a list of next steps, with priorities and resource requirements to be reviewed by mentors
  • Complete an individual course evaluation

Learning Outcomes:

  • Identification of areas of integration and application of climate and equity into the asset management plan
  • Analysis of risks including climate hazards, using ISO 31000 Risk standards (identification, analysis, evaluation, management)
  • Development of improvement plan for the local government outlining next steps in climate adaption and resilience planning, equity considerations, and green infrastructure.

Delivery

This will be an intensive but practical and rewarding course consisting of six 2-hour live sessions that will give you instructions for homework activities to be completed throughout the week. These homework activities will assess where your organization is at and help build toward the “final assignment” Improvement Plan. The live session videos will be recorded and posted for participants to view for up to 60 days after the live session date.

And you won’t just learn from presentations – you will also get to participate in an engaging and collaborative discussion during the sessions and throughout the course.

Online Program

This is a 100% online program, which gives you the flexibility to adapt your training to your professional and personal needs.  

The live sessions will be presented on Zoom webinar platform and recordings will be available for participants to watch for up to 60 days past the live session date.

The course uses a “Community Discussion Forum” for participants and course mentors to post questions, resources, course slides, video recordings, and homework reminders. This will remain open for continued discussion after the course.

The course is targeted at those who have completed the Professional Certificate in Asset Management Planning course. Those with equivalent training and experience will also be considered.
